Mexicali.- To have a road map that guides actions to promote the semiconductor industry, the State Government through the Ministry of Economy and Innovation (SEI) joined the study carried out by the United States Embassy in Mexico and the United States-Mexico Foundation for Science (FUMEC), announced Secretary Kurt Honold Morales.

He added that the delegation made up of members of FUMEC and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) carried out interviews and visits in Mexicali, Tijuana and Ensenada with companies in the semiconductor and electronics sector, as well as educational institutions. to know their vision, challenges and opportunities.

This is part of the activities to obtain data on the situation of semiconductors, manufacturers and importers, and an analysis of the value chain, the role that Mexico plays in said market, investment opportunities and participation in the supply chain of companies installed in Mexico.

Eugenio Marín, executive director of FUMEC, explained that the agenda is part of a broad study financed by USAID and that has been developed for months and includes qualitative information to support the topic of semiconductors.

“An analysis of the value chains has been carried out from Asia to the United States and Mexico and Canada, and we obtained key information that is complemented by interviews to understand integration in the North American block.

In Baja California we seek to understand the industrial fabric that supports the industry, to identify the things that are being done well and that can be replicated and converted into support programs in the rest of Mexico,” he said.

For his part, Ramiro Nava, deputy director of ProIntegridad, which is part of USAID, explained that Baja California has the advantage of a strong school-business connection, so the strategy seeks to articulate three axes: the creation of capabilities, the promotion of local supply and the creation of talent to have a competitive environment.

Accompanied by the Directorate of Promotion of Innovation and Technology of the SEI, the delegation visited Cetys Universidad, UABC, CICESE and the Center for Nanosciences and Nanotechnology of the UNAM, to learn about the current actions and good practices such as the semiconductor program that is has at the Autonomous University of Baja California.

During the interviews with representatives of the companies Skyworks, Infineon, Hisense, Qualcomm and Foxcon, details of their business models, value chain, supply, talent and strategic vision with opportunities to integrate the sector were discussed.

Finally, the state official said that the semiconductor industry is related transversally to all other industries such as automotive, electronics, medical devices, entertainment and in general, all of them, which is why it is considered strategic.

The results of this national study will be announced at the second Semiconductor Forum, which will be held in Baja California in June 2024.
